Even though the Congress has pitched Rahul Gandhi as a Prime Ministerial candidate for 2019 polls, the party gave out some indications that it may not be averse to supporting senior leaders including Mamata Banerjee and Mayawati for the PM.
The Congress might project a woman prime ministerial candidate as a joint opposition candidate and Rahul Gandhi may have to step aside it that materializes.
“ In fact, the Congress is not averse to the backing seasoned leaders like Mamata Banerjee and the party would be happy to see any prime minister not backed by RSS, ” sources said.
With the avowed aim to unseating the Modi from the top post the Congress might cobble up alliances with various parties in states and Rahul Gandhi has been given full powers to forge alliances with like-minded political parties in the Congress working committee meeting held on Sunday.
“Rahul Gandhi will be the face of the Congress for the prime minister’s post and let us know how the dice rolls, “ said Congress insiders
“In an “ideological fight” between Congress and BJP, it is imperative that the collective will of the whole opposition is taken into account when you bring all the opposition parties together to defeat the BJP” Congress sources said.
