Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal Has Announced A Reward Of Rs 50 Lakh For Hima Das

After making the nation proud in Finland last week winning a gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships now its time for Hima to collect her booty of rewards. Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh for Das.

Congratulating Hima Das for her achievement in his twitter message, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, Dr G Parameshwara announced a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. In his Message, he wrote –

“The Grit and Perseverance displayed by @HimaDas8 is inspirational for thousands of aspiring sportspersons across India.”

Sports India (erstwhile SAI) DG Neelam Kapur. Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi announced Rs 1 lakh from the trust run in the name of his parents. Former minister of Assam Gautam Roy also offered 1 lakh, Assam Athletic Association and Assam Olympic Association also offered Rs 2 Lakhs each.

The athlete has also assured of Government funding till the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Sports India (erstwhile SAI) DG Neelam Kapur said, “ “Hima, post her excellent performance at CWG 2018, where she ran her then personal best of 51.32, was inducted in ministry’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in May 2018. Under the scheme, in addition to the Rs 50,000 per month as Out of Pocket Allowance (OPA), she would be provided end to end support towards her Olympic preparation by the Govt.

The 18 years old from Assam who won a gold medal with record-breaking time will e State’s brand ambassador for sports. The state Government will organise a State level felicitation ceremony to honour her achievements said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appreciated her great achievements in a mass rally in UP. Modi began his speech by commending the 18 years old sprinter. The MP said –

“She is the daughter of the country, Assam’s athlete Hima Das. Seeing her passionately search for the Tricolour immediately after winning. She wrapped traditional Assamese gamocha around her neck while flying National Tri-Colour. Her getting emotional while singing the National Anthem touched me deeply. I was extremely moved. Which Indian won’t have tears of joy on seeing this. It gives new energy and encouragement to 1.24 million Indians. I congratulate her for making the country proud.

Hailing from Kandhulimari, about five kilometres from Dhing town in central Assam’s Nagaon he is a daughter of a poor farmer.
